Session Type: Symposium
Pedagogical scaffolds offer a critical means to support emergent bIlinguals’ (EBs) academic and linguistic development. Such scaffolds include the use of planned materials, structures, and curricula, as well as in-the-moment interactional supports for content and language development. Scaffolds enable EBs to take on challenging tasks, yet studies show that well-intentioned teachers can unintentionally overscaffold, positioning EBs as passive respondents rather than active participants in their learning. Five studies use detailed analysis of classroom talk and instruction to highlight the ways pedagogical scaffolds provided by teachers and peers shape the literacy tasks and the experiences of EBs developing language and literacy. This symposium contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities of scaffolding for EBs with implications for research and practice.
