Session Type: Symposium
In the proposed symposium, we, three of the first long-term international education faculty in China, all working on issues of criticality, reflexivity, and praxis across cultures, along with leading scholars in Indigenous, comparative, global citizenship, and critical education as Chair and Discussant, will explore Boaventura de Sousa Santos’ concept of “epistemologies of the South”(de Sousa Santos, 2012).
Drawing on concepts on which ES is constructed - intercultural translation, ecologies of knowledge, sociology of absences and sociologies of emergences - we will contend that in order to address the AERA theme of “knowledge to action,” “alternative thinking of alternatives” around our thematic foci of schooling, Global Citizenship Education, ecopedagogy, and Ubuntu, respectively, must receive serious consideration in praxis.
Finding Our Way Cross-Culturally: Educators Walking With and Working With and for Indigenous Communities - Robert V. Morgan, Wollotuka -Aboriginal Studies; Robert J. Tierney, The University of British Columbia, The University of Sydney, Beijing Normal University
Contextualizing Socio-Environmental Knowledges in Teaching: Eco-Pedagogy and Comparative and International Education as Inseparable - Greg William Misiaszek, Beijing Normal University
