Session Summary

A Decolonized Curriculum Future: Toward Geopolitical Traditions of Educational and Cultural Criticism

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Third Floor, Room 3.02-3.03

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The purpose of our symposium is to relocate the history of curriculum studies’ Reconceptualization within the exigencies of a broader decolonizing curriculum project. Drawing on decolonizing curriculum traditions, our symposium critiques existing histories of curriculum studies’ Reconceptualization as emerging from US-centered, Anglophone, and whitened assumptions. Beginning with this historicized critique of the Reconceptualization, presenters in this symposium contest the Pinarian notion of the internationalization as the “third paradigm” of US curriculum studies, and instead we emphasize the arduous decolonizing project of moving curriculum studies toward geopolitical traditions of educational and cultural criticism. Overall, presenters in our symposium, working distinct traditions including Korean, Chinese, Indonesian, Latin American, and US traditions begin to lay out a post-epistemicidal curriculum futurity.
