Addressing the Challenges of Early Literacy Teaching and Learning: Report From a Multisite, Multiyear Initiative

Abstract

How can a partnership between private philanthropy and on-the-ground practitioners and researchers become a catalyst for innovative and successful projects to improve literacy outcomes of urban pre-K to grade 3 children? In this symposium, we share the work of four projects in NYC, supported by private funding for public education, which are addressing challenges in providing authentic and purposeful in-school and afterschool experiences that promote literacy learning and effective teacher practice. The findings from this multi-site, multi-year project provide directions into improving early reading achievement.
