Session Summary

Deconstructing Critical-Radical Mathematics Teaching Practice: A Workshop for Exploring the Teaching of Social Justice Pedagogues Through Video Artifacts

Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 6:05pm, The Parker, Floor: Third Floor, Mirus Room

Session Type: Workshop

Abstract

In this workshop, the presenters invite participants to view, analyze, and discuss videos of both critical and radical mathematics teaching. The two video artifacts feature the teaching practice of Bob Moses, radical mathematics educator and Eric “Rico” Gutstein, critical mathematics educator. The workshop facilitators will ask participants to investigate and surface essential features of teaching in both contexts in an effort to surface pedagogical moves that deepen students engagement with mathematical content while also preparing students to engage with their worlds transformatively. Participants will view the clips separately and discuss them in their own right but will also discuss questions across teaching contexts/frameworks that help advance a common language around what constitutes radical and/or critical mathematics teaching.
