Session Type: Symposium
This symposium addresses the question: Can we build our work on the contributions of researchers whose discourse is different from, and possibly incommensurable with, our own? The characterization of theory as “a set of endorsed narratives within a specific discourse” affords consideration of how two theories speaking about the same phenomena but created in different discourses can both be useful in spite of the possible incommensurability of the discourses. In the symposium, three researchers, each with a well-defined research discourse present their own theories in the context of learning algebra, and comment on the possibility of integrating their story with those of the other participants. Two commentators will draw on the three presentations to address the key question.
