Abstract

In recent years, urban schools advocates have re/tunred to reform strategies that serve more than just students’ academic needs. One strategy gaining ground, community schools provide a range of services to address the needs of students, families, and communities, (Jenkins & Duffy, 2016). While much of the political and scholarly work has been focused on services these schools provide, community schools raise important questions regarding democratic governance, engagement, and underlying questions of race, class, power and inequity. This session, brings together engaged scholars (Hale, 2008) and community activists from the northeastern U.S. who are grappling with limits, contradictions and radical possibilities (Anyon, 2014) of community schools in four cities: Baltimore, Philadelphia, Newark, Jersey City, and New York City.
