Animals in Environmental Education: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Curriculum and Pedagogy

Abstract

Our symposium presents new interdisciplinary approaches to building understandings of nonhuman animals and to investigating our relationships with animals. We present ideas for curriculum and pedagogy, engaging with the extant animal-centered education literature, focusing on interdisciplinary teaching about animals. We ask how we can produce curricula and pedagogy that give voice to animals and allow students to explore the complex, and sometimes exploitative, ways in which our lives are intimately entangled with those of other animals. The papers in our session bring a wide range of methodologies to bear on the ‘animal question’ in education, including phenomenological exploration, collaboration across ethics and ethology, artistic representation, and more. We aim to demonstrate how interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches uniquely illuminate animal-focused environmental education.
