Participatory Research Methodologies in Equity-Oriented Research: Action Through Literacy

Abstract

This symposium brings together 3 projects that illuminate what it means to do research with, rather than merely on, historically minoritized communities. Taken together, the projects showcase the range of ways participatory research may look: they are situated in varied contexts, involve a range of participants, and are centered on questions animated by local concerns. Their juxtaposition helps braid together various “locals” to paint a broader and more systemic picture of educational (in)equities and of action through literacy. They raise questions about the challenges facing participatory research and offer ways forward in addressing its potential for democratic education.
