This session brings together lead authors from a recent special issue of Distance Education on Social Presence to discuss extensions and practical implications of themes that arose among the studies included in the special issue. Specifically, the discussion will center around the lack of a consistent definition of social presence and its effects on research and practice, how social presence relates to learning, and the roles that conflict, identity, and othering play in the establishment of social presence among a group of learners.
