Adapted Interview Approaches With Students of Color in Urban Schools and Settings

Abstract

This session will highlight adapted interview approaches to deepen the understanding of the educational experiences of students of color in low income and urban schools and settings: 1) an educational timeline with young adults restarting their secondary education; 2) an adapted phenomenological interview protocol with young people who have been arrested; 3) a walking plática with community college students in the Tijuana-San Diego borderlands; and 4) an artistically engaged methodology with recently arrived immigrant children. Presenters will show participant identified and produced artifacts, including public murals, life graphs, and social network maps; and discuss the methodological value of adapted interview approaches with student populations pursuing their education alongside barriers. Time will be dedicated for audience members to share best practices.
