STEM as an Urban Equity Strategy: Memphis as a Microcosm

Abstract
This paper session includes four papers describing different STEM education strategies in the same urban school district. These initiatives include a selective STEM high school, an inclusive STEM elementary school, an out-of-school summer program, and a STEM professional development program. The fifth paper in the session uses the results of the first four papers to construct a framework for examining the opportunities for STEM education to promote equity in urban schools. Using the Memphis case as a microcosm, the authors examine the challenges and affordances of STEM as an equity strategy.
