Students’ interactions with educational technologies produce logs of learning events that can be used to understand students’ self-, co-regulated and socially-shared-regulation of learning processes (Hadwin, Järvelä, & Miller, 2011; Winne & Hadwin, 1998). Summarized data become “learning analytics” that can be presented back to learners and instructors to guide future learning activity. Presentors will demonstrate data visualizations that scaffold learners’ and instructors’ awareness, self-reflection, and sensemaking; they may also impact future action (Verbert, Duval, Klerkx, Govaerts, & Santos, 2013). Learning technology platforms include learning management systems, intelligent tutoring systems, mobile applications, and textbook companion sites; scaffolds include graphical displays of learner behavior, data driven alerts to struggling learners, adaptive advice to collaborative teams, and dashboards of student learning for teachers.
