Navigating Boundaries at the Nexus of Research and Practice

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Westin New York at Times Square, Floor: Ninth Floor, Palace Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The papers in this symposium investigate the nexus of research and practice, where researchers and practitioners navigate boundaries in order to engage in the joint work of educational improvement. We share findings from four studies across the U.S. that (1) illuminate the structures, processes, and incentives that mediate research use among school leaders and teachers; (2) reveal challenges that brokers face within their organizations as well as between research and practice in order to facilitate collaboration; (3) detail the moves that brokers make in navigating boundaries in order to sustain joint work in a partnership; and (4) characterize the ways in which organizational conditions and capacity influence the nature and success of researcher-practitioner collaboration.
