Session Type: Structured Poster Session
In 2012, Paris published a call to move the field of education forward in its consideration and use of “resource pedagogies,” (p. 94) including culturally relevant pedagogy (Ladson-Billings), funds of knowledge (Moll & Gonzalez, 1994), third space (Gutierrez et al., 1999) and culturally responsive pedagogy (Cazden & Leggett, 1995) among others. Paris asks us to think beyond using language and culture as a resource toward dominant (mainstream) linguistic and cultural knowledge and practices, and to use school to sustain the (fluid) cultural and linguistic identities of our students. This session seeks to reflect on what culturally sustaining and revitalizing (McCarty & Lee, 2014) pedagogy really is and to illuminate what education looks like within this shift.
