Session Type: Symposium
This symposium will elaborate on a multi-sited ethnographic study of Hip Hop as Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP). Together, a university, two community-based hip hop organizations, and a high school based in the California Bay Area and Cape Town, South Africa undertook the development of a CSPs framework for comparative study and global cultural and pedagogical exchange. This symposium will explore how Hip Hop, youth culture, and social justice ideas were combined to impact high school students’ engagement and learning in school, community, and civic life. We argue that Hip Hop educators must continue to reach toward new futures and possibilities that courageously embrace loving critique and community-rooted collective dreaming.
