The Necessity and Possibilities of Latinx Youth-Focused Participatory Action Research

Abstract

This session considers the impact of participatory action research (PAR) by and for Latinx youth as a tool for education, restoration, and liberation. Chronically underserved by the nation’s educational systems from early childhood to higher education, Latinxs have been facing an “education crisis” for decades (Gándara & Contreras, 2009). These papers discuss Latinx Youth PAR projects that are occurring across the U.S., inside and outside of the classroom. Focusing on a range of ideas that include pedagogy, research, and mental health, the papers collectively make a case for both the necessity and the transformative potential of Latinx Youth PAR.
