Session Type: Symposium
This session draws out the tensions between public education and Afrolatinx students. Historical legacies of slavery and colonialism shape the experiences of latino students, particularly those who identify as Afrolatinx; these students have also been part and parcel to the development of public education across the Americas. We explore the unique cultural and historical contexts that afrolatinx students bring with them as they navigate the the public education landscape. Considering the competing notions of race that present themselves in the schooling context and the impact on afrolatinx students identity, we offer suggestions to educators for improving the experience of afrolatinx students and increasing opportunities for educational attainment.
