The Necessity of Seeing Anew: Dreaming Up New Possibilities for Research on Nondominant Communities

Sat, April 14, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Fourth Floor, Holland Suite

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session examines the possibilities of conducting research anew with non-dominant communities. We argue that it is insufficient to claim a critical methodological lens to research without careful, iterative attention to the moment-to-moment use of research methods with communities. In particular, our session highlights the complexities of co-designing, with communities and researchers, new futures (Author, 2008) that are humanizing and equitable. Our research team represents members from several institutions and this presents a set of unique challenges and opportunities for doing collaborative, research with non-dominant communities. Toward this end, we foreground the collective intergenerational learning that has occurred in our multi-sited, and long-term research project.
