Session Summary

School Climate as a Predictor of Mathematics Motivation and Achievement Internationally

Tue, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Session Type: Poster Session

Abstract

Previous research has identified school climate as a key predictor of educational outcomes, including student achievement and motivation. In addition, school climate may be particularly important within lower socioeconomic status (SES) contexts. However, extant research typically has been conducted within the U.S. and has been limited in methodological complexity. The present study utilized the TIMSS 2015 data to examine multi-level models predicting student mathematics interest and achievement internationally. Results indicated that positive school climate at both the student- and school-levels predicted achievement and interest in mathematics. Although higher school SES predicted higher achievement, it predicted lower interest. The present study contributes to understanding how school climate and SES predict student outcomes using multi-level modeling within an international sample.
