Abstract

This panel addresses diverse biographical projects that take up issues of race and gender. Drawing from diverse biographical projects focused on 'lives that are educative,' we consider how race and gender shape the lives of biographical subjects in both visible and invisible ways as well as how scholars grapple with race/gender methodologically. Scholars have long noted the archival record is shaped by race, class, gender, and sexuality historically, rendering some subjects' lives invisible and necessitating a range of methodologies and data sources to uncover and conduct life histories. We focus on the intersections of race/gender in the lives of our biographical subjects as well as the ways race/gender shaped methodological choices and puzzles in conducting our research.
