Raising Standards and Increasing Teacher Racial Diversity: Critical Perspectives Beyond the Binary

Abstract

As classrooms in the United States become more racially diverse, there is increasing concern over a growing racial mismatch between students of color and their teachers. Simultaneously, there has been controversy over whether the supposed “raising of standards” for teachers (primarily through standardized test cut stores) acts as another impediment for those people of color interested in pursuing teaching. In this symposium, presenters will speak back to this issue as represented in the recent Center for American Progress report on teacher diversity and standards. Presenters will also discuss their scholarship and practice around successful recruitment and retention for teachers of color.
