Empirical research in Educational Psychology does not adequately reflect the shifting demographics of Western society that is becoming increasingly culturally diverse. For example, DeCuir-Gunby and Schutz (2014) estimate that only about 1% of articles published in top-tiered educational psychology journals during the period of 2001-2011 explicitly focused on topics such as race, ethnicity, stereotype threat, and prejudice. However, in the last few years there is a growing awareness among educational psychologists that consideration of culture in its many manifestations is essential if we want our scholarship to provide a more comprehensive account of the schooling experiences of culturally diverse youth. Collectively, the presentations will showcase various methodologies that can promote a more nuanced and contextualized representation of race and ethnicity.
