Division J Vice Presidential Session: Connecting Research, Advocacy, and Policy: A Conversation Among Education Scholars

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fourth Floor, Odets

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

What is the role of higher education research in informing policymakers and practitioners about the need for policies and actions that advance equity, inclusiveness, and social change? Most would agree about the utility of disseminating results to audiences beyond the traditional scholarly community to influence policy and practice. There is less agreement about whether and how academic researchers should be “advocates” for equity, inclusiveness, and social change.
This session is intended to encourage interactive dialogue among educational researchers about these questions. By including individuals with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints, the session is intended to provide a thought-provoking portrayal of the varying ways scholars distinguish between research and advocacy in their efforts to advance equity, inclusiveness, and social change in education.
