Division E Fireside Chat. Adolescent Mental Health in Schools and the Community: Supporting Students and Families in an Uncertain Political Landscape

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Crown Plaza Times Square, Floor: Lobby Level, Act I-II Room

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Adjusting to the complexities of adolescence is a difficult transition for youth and their families. For example, adolescence is a time of uncertainty, involving physical and emotional changes which requires both support and autonomy from families. However, the current, uncertain political climate makes this transition more challenging, especially for those who find themselves vulnerable to changes of political policies such as DACA. Because of this, it is important for counselors and educators in multiple contexts (i.e., schools; outpatient settings; universities) to be aware of how to meet the present needs of their clients and families. This fireside chat focuses on how school and mental health counselors, educators, and researchers can support adolescents and their families through practice, policies, and advocacy.
