Alternative Routes to Initial Teacher Preparation in The Netherlands: Dreams, Possibilities and Practices

Abstract

The past years, the field of teacher education and qualification has drastically changed in
the Netherlands. Due to political and societal developments (see Honingh & Hooge, 2009)
and changes in perspectives on how to educate pre-service teachers, the educational
landscape in The Netherlands has become one of multiple entries into teaching varying in
target group, duration, type of qualification etc. (see also Bolhuis, 2002; Snoek, 2003,
2005, Brouwer et al., 2016)). In addition to the initial teacher preparation programs (ITP)
leading to a formal qualification, many alternative pathways exist. All formal qualification
programs and alternative pathways are described in the most recent OECD TALIS Initial
teacher preparation study (Brouwer et al., 2016).
