Overwhelmed and Underprepared: The Role of Teacher Education in Addressing School Violence Prevention

Abstract

This case study emphasized urban high school educators’ and their perceptions of their pre-service and in-service education regarding five student health-related antecedents to conflict and violence in school. Data collection included individual audio-recorded interviews and a focus group with 14 teachers and two assistant administrators within a Midwestern urban high school. Results indicated that nine Midwestern pre-service teacher education institutions, across six differing states, did not address conflict resolution, violence prevention, and five student health-related antecedents to conflict and violence in school with their pre-service teachers. Results also indicated that while teachers and administrators are experiencing student health-related antecedents to conflict and violence in school on a daily basis, in-service training is also failing to address these issues.
