Model Comparison for English Public Speaking Self-Efficacy: Bifactor Versus Second-Order Models

Abstract

Grounded in the confirmative factor analysis framework, the present study compared the bifactor and second-order models of English public speaking (EPS) self-efficacy and tested the viability of its conceptualization as both unidimensional (the general EPS self-efficacy factor) and multidimensional (the four underlying specific factors of topic competence, organization competence, language competence, and delivery competence) construct. Participants were 203 Chinese EFL college students. By examining fit indices, common variance, factor loadings, and omega values, we conclude that the bifactor model is the most appropriate representation of the ESP self-efficacy structure, confirming that EPS self-efficacy can be best understood and measured as a single unidimensional construct with four underlying EPS self-efficacy dimensions. Methodological, theoretical, and practical implications are discussed.
