Recruiting, preparing, and retaining high quality diverse teachers are three of the most critical problems plaguing our nation’s urban schools that serve a vast majority of children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Though research has identified leading barriers to the recruitment, preparation, and retention of highly qualified diverse educators, it is not clear, however, what best practices and scalable models different teacher preparation programs in the United States (i.e., national landscape) have adopted to address the diversity gap. Our literature synthesis study intends to shed light on best practices and promising scalable models that teacher preparation programs in the nation have been implementing to address the diversity gap in the teaching force.
