In this paper, we contribute to the rich history of innovation in the self-study research community by exploring why self-study researchers might enact methodological inventiveness in composing written accounts of their scholarly work and analysis. The paper offers a narrative dialogue to illustrate how a transdisciplinary group of emerging self-study scholars engaged with the “why” of methodological inventiveness in writing. The dialogue is followed by a brief analysis of four exemplars of graduate student writing that demonstrate a variety of forms and formats in which emerging self-study researchers are representing and communicating their work. We close by considering the impact – both for and beyond the self.
