Reconciliation and Colonial Violence in the Academy

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 710

Abstract

While reconciliation is high on the agenda for many educational institutions, many fall far short of implementing any of the calls to action and senior administrators have articulated that they do not know what to do, how to do it, or what it is supposed to look like. This SSHRC funded research shows reoccurring themes of violence in educational institutions was critically important to Indigenous research participants. The author makes recommendations for ways universities can unpack and address expressions of violence and contestation in order to move reconciliaction forward in meaningful and respectful ways.
