Poster #6 - Examining Broad-Based Pedagogical Leadership: How Teachers Perceive and Are Engaged in Their School's Strategic Development?

Tue, April 9, 12:20 to 1:50pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

This inquiry focuses on strategic leadership, defined here as a component of broad-based pedagogical leadership, and how teachers in Finnish comprehensive schools perceive it in conjunction with their own roles as school developers. Broad-based pedagogical leadership is related to instructional leadership as the approaches of these two roles have many shared ideas. Strategic leadership consists of principals’ visions regarding the direction of their schools, and emphasizes collective discussion, planning, and decision-making. The data are teachers’ responses in an electronic survey (n=155). Results indicate that teachers who have been involved in leadership teamwork possess increased positive opinions concerning their role in school development. Further, there are significant differences among schools concerning the practices of teacher participation in organizational decision-making.
