Results of a cluster randomized controlled trial (54 classrooms, 15 teachers, and over 700 students) comparing the effects of blocked and interleaved mathematics practice provide strong support for the efficacy and feasibility of using interleaved practice as a method to enhance the mathematics achievement of seventh grade students. The standardized effect size of interleaved practice from a two-level multilevel model (students nested within classes) was large (0.74). We describe ways that interleaved practice might be implemented in classrooms and discuss how implementation may incur only modest costs to teachers and schools while yielding large learning benefits.
