The Relationship Between Engagement in Applied Learning Experiences and Students' Academic Motivation in College

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between engagement in several applied learning experiences during college and students’ fourth-year academic motivation using data from the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education. Results suggest that several applied learning experiences are positively associated with students’ academic motivation, including asking students to apply theories or concepts to practical problems or in new situations, using exams or assignments that required use of course content to address a problem, engaging in research with a faculty member, and engaging in out-of-class experiences that help to translate knowledge and understanding from the classroom into action.
