Abstract

Young adolescents demonstrate important physical, cognitive-intellectual, moral, psychological and social-emotional changes and needs. As a growing number of middle level learners opt for full-time virtual learning, it is important that we further our understanding of the middle level learner experience within the virtual classroom context. In this way, we can continue to learn more about how such experiences speak to the fit between adolescent development and the online classroom space. This phenomenological case study seeks to share the lived educational experiences of two middle level virtual students throughout their first year of middle level virtual education in an attempt to determine in what ways, if any, the virtual context supports the developmental needs of middle level learners.
