Teaching STEM Within Social Studies as Citizenship Education: A Multimodal Study of Preservice Teachers' Perspectives

Tue, April 9, 10:25 to 11:55am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall G

Abstract

After completing a social studies methods course, preservice teachers explained the impact of teaching STEM within the social studies as a component of civic education. Participants were 15 preservice teachers who had participated in an intervention embedded in a methods course. Data were collected using an interview protocol based on the findings of a 2016 attitude-belief study. New results suggest that although students’ beliefs had not diminished, challenges remain about how to more deeply link STEM to civics within the methods course as well as subsequent implementation in student teaching.
