The Thought Chronicle: Developing a Multimodal Repertoire of Response in Teacher Education

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, Floor: Lower Concourse, Osgoode Ballroom

Abstract

Following the call for "multimodal narratives to democratize evidence," this paper details a multimodal practice of response and transmediation, called a Thought Chronicle, which I employ in my undergraduate work with preservice teachers. I position this intervention in relation to the theoretical discourses of multimodality, social semiotics, and psychoanalytic ideas of dreaming and play. As a means of highlighting their voices, I also provide a number of examples from my students’ work. By developing a multimodal collection of metaphorical response to our course readings, my students begin to see the interconnection between intellectual and affective engagement, and to consequently rethink the meanings of literacy beyond language.
