School safety has become a concern for teachers in Illinois. While teachers are often confronted with student violence and disciplinary problems in their schools, little research has been conducted that examines their perceptions of school safety. Therefore, this study examines Illinois teachers’ perceptions of gun violence and school safety as well as their perceptions of proposed and current legislation. The findings of this study indicate that a majority of teachers across Illinois are concerned about gun violence. These teachers support the establishment of gun safety measures, and are against teachers and school staff carrying guns in schools. Researchers and policy makers must consider teachers perceptions as they develop programs and policies aimed at improving school climate and school safety.
