Poster #34 - How Principals Manage Their Emotions

Abstract

While principals’ work demands that they manage their emotions. This study provides insight into how principals manage their emotions and the supports they use to cope with the emotionally burdensome aspects of their position. Gross’ (2014) process model for emotional regulation provides the framework for this study. The process model includes five families of emotional regulation, such as situation selection, situation modification, attentional deployment, cognitive change, and response modulation. Data for this study is derived from 13 interviews with principals representing the broad range of contexts where principals in Ontario work. This research strategies principals use to manage their emotions which extend well beyond the five approaches to emotional regulation previously reported in the literature.
