Abstract

We evaluated the factor structure and reliability of the Short Grit Scale (Grit-S; Duckworth & Quinn, 2009) and examined the relationships between the scores on the grit subscales (Consistency of Interests and Perseverance of Effort) and 11th and 12th grade Advanced Placement (n = 514) and International Baccalaureate Diploma (n=617) students’ academic performance, attitudes toward school and teachers, academic self-perceptions, goal valuation, and motivation/self-regulation. Our results support a two-factor model of grit (not a one-factor model), and indicate that the correlations of grit with academic achievement and conceptually related motivational variables provide stronger evidence of the validity of the grit factor of perseverance of effort scores compared to the validity evidence for the grit factor of consistency of interests.
