This study explores how preservice teachers (PSTs) in a science content/methods class, use an innovative lesson sequence called a Transformational Reading Exercise (TRE). TREs require that PSTs read assigned culturally relevant literature and write personal responses. The TRE is followed by guided class discussions of culturally relevant teaching followed by intentional application of those concepts in after-school environments, Family Science Learning Events. Data collection included written reading and family science reflections, as well as quantitative pre/post surveys. Results show a significant increased importance and value in using culturally relevant teaching and positive changes in PSTs perceptions regarding culture. Recommendations include reforming education courses to include use of structured reading/reflecting/writing sequences with intentional, authentic venues that incorporate meaningful culturally relevant experiences.
