This study aimed to compare the effects of two model-based curricula focused on model construction (MC) and model interpretation (MI). Participants are 56 seventh graders. Students’ learning outcomes were measured by 1) written assessment for the students’ competence in model explanation, model prediction, and model construction, and 2) a questionnaire for the students’ views of scientific models and modeling (VSMM). Although both classes improved their modeling competence in the post-tests, the students in the MI class did better than their counter-part in model construction. Additionally, the questionnaire results showed that the students in the MC class gained in three aspects in VSMM while the students in the MI class gained in four aspects. The implications for curriculum design are discussed.
