Thinking With Dewey: Giving Access to the Democratic Deliberative Method in Schools for Peace in Our Time

Abstract

Dewey identified war and violence indicated a breakdown of democratic deliberation. Nowadays increasing nationalism, and breakdown of societies signifies social chaos. Confederate flags fly in the US symbolising commitment to racialised slavery. De Gruy identifies slaves’ critical minds underpinning good acts using inference, were replaced for fixed mindsets of inferiority. This paper deconstructs how Education Governance Systems (EGS) may perpetuate the slave’s fixed mind set. Then, thinking with Dewey, reconstructs how EGS may implement democratic deliberation to facilitate citizens as: a) critical problem solvers who can prioritise the order of their goods, and their production, and make choices about how to live a good life; b) advocate for enlightened professional educational leaders to offer the democratic deliberative method to all.
