Doing Race in Elementary Social Studies Methods Class: An Intervention Lesson on Brown

Abstract

In the United States where race mattered and continues to matter, preparation of elementary pre-service teachers with critical racial knowledge is vital for young children to learn about issues of race and racism and become racially literate citizens for a more just and humane society. As an elementary social studies methods instructor, I developed and modeled lessons of "doing race" in social studies as one of the ways to assist elementary preservice teachers with critical racial knowledge and commitment to do race in their future classrooms. This article focuses on one of the modeled lessons, which centered on the topic of school segregation. The possibilities and limitations of the intervention lesson are presented and discussed.
