Multimodal Narratives of Academic Identity: Using an ePortfolio as a Catalyst for Self-Study Research

Fri, April 5, 2:25 to 3:55pm, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 800 Level, Hall F

Abstract

At a time when a strong research profile is at the thrust of development, advancements, funding, job tenure and security in higher level education institutions, the creation of a robust academic identity has never been more important. This study, set in an Irish context, uses a self-study conceptual framework to explore how an ePortfolio can facilitate a researcher to build up a picture of their varied research interests over a period of time. The ePortfolio is posited as a multimodal self-narrative which acts as a catalyst in the autoethnographic process of academic identity formation. It is shown that an ePortfolio is an easily accessible stimulus that facilitates and promotes the gathering of and reflecting upon key research interests.
