Critical Pedagogy Versus Culturally Responsive Teaching: The Struggle for Hegemony in Teacher Education

Abstract

Within the university, teacher education is grounded in two distinct theoretical models: Critical Pedagogy and Culturally Responsive Teaching. Culturally Responsive Teaching is overwhelmingly favored over Critical Pedagogy within teacher education in the United States. What do we gain/lose when we adopt Culturally Responsive Teaching as opposed to Critical Pedagogy as the model for teacher education? Which model is able to answer the right’s claim of liberal bias in education? Which discourse offers opportunities to interrogate and disrupt anti-democratic ideologies, i.e., Trump’s neoliberalism fascism and/or the strengthening of a visible white supremacist ideology within formal governmental institutions like ICE, the executive office or Congress?
