The newly developed 2I/E model describes academic self-concept formation by the joint operation of social, dimensional, and temporal comparison processes. Dimensional comparison theory assumes that dimensional contrast effects are stronger between dissimilar than between similar subjects. The present study combines these two perspectives: For the first time, we integrated four subjects (math, science, English, German) into the 2I/E model. In line with the 2I/E model, we found strong social comparison effects, small temporal comparison effects, and moderate dimensional comparison effects between dissimilar subjects (e.g., math and German) on academic self-concept. In line with dimensional comparison theory, dimensional comparison effects were substantially weaker between similar subjects (math and science; German and English) and sometimes even assimilative.
