Studying Practice and Student Learning: Teacher Perceptions of an Induction Program

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 700 Level, Room 715B

Abstract

A collaborative partnership among educator preparation programs (EPP) in one state resulted in the creation of a new teacher induction program designed to support teacher retention in the state. The induction program was designed around EPP outcomes and strategies to build on preparation for career sustainability. New teachers participated in Studying Practice and Student Learning (SPSL) workshops as communities of practice to analyze student performance and engage in goal-setting stemming from formative observation feedback and shared reflection. Evidence from teacher focus groups, goal-setting documents, and surveys indicate new teacher participants appreciate feedback from external observers, gain resilience from goal-setting, and a stronger sense of teacher efficacy after participating in a year-long induction program focused on learning via goal-setting.
