Poster #33 - Becoming a Nurse Aide: An Investigation of How Newly Hired Nurse Aides Learn and Develop at the Workplace

Sun, April 7, 8:00 to 9:30am, Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Floor: 300 Level, Hall C

Abstract

Not much is known about how newly hired nurse aides develop knowledge, skills, and abilities at the workplace that allow them to deal with the high levels of physical and emotional demands of the job. This contribution therefore sets out to take a first step into closing this research gap. Based on interviews with 14 geriatric care nurses first empirical insights were obtained answering the following research questions: (1) How are nurse aides currently prepared for their work? (2) What are the potentials and problems of the current training scheme? (3) How can this training scheme be improved to assure effective and efficient learning and development?
