This exploratory multiple-case study created professional learning activities to support primary teachers in designing multimodal literacy pedagogies that included digital technologies. Study questions addressed in this paper concern the ways the teachers combined digital and traditional resources in their lessons and the effects on children’s literacy learning. Data were collected through ethnographic-type methods and a qualitative analysis was conducted. Data show that the teachers explored and expanded understandings of literacies, pedagogies, and technologies as they designed literacy lessons. Within these lessons, the children used technologies to explore and extend literacies. This study builds on literature that produces knowledge about how teachers and young children can learn from/with each other to expand understandings of literacies through digital texts and practices.
